I would like it considered to be a medical malady that stays with him. And it would fine if he's not affected by a moon unless he's planetside (not that he'll know this) so visiting some planets would be absolutely terrible what with having multiple moons and others would be fine with there being none. I think it would be best to just go with that and not the Earth's moon cycle - no need to complicate things more than they already are.
