CIVILIAN CONVOY
✦ CIVILIAN CONVOY ✦ |
|
Here. Here. They are coming. |
... We have trained them to think of the Future as a promised land which favored heroes attain ... |
The "Fleet" is comprised of actually two divisions of ships: The Military Armada and the Civilian Convoy. And both are comprised of hundreds of ships. The Owmi have been living in, building, and repairing ships for over a thousand years. In that time they have built upon what the Ibere knew. And they would argue they have made significant improvements over time. All Owmi vessels vary in design and function, some designs more successful than others. The Owmi love learning new things – sometimes the best way to learn is to experiment and some of the ships are most definitely working experiments. Some vessels are mostly inorganic mechanical. Some are mostly organic biomechanical. Some balance the two (organic and inorganic) in more equal measures. But despite the different designs, they share a number of things in common. All vessels contain: ✦ An organic air-water-waste recycling system. ✦ Artificial gravity. ✦ A fleet-wide integrated digital network and communications system. They can all communicate with one another effectively and efficiently. ✦ Protective sheilding of various strengths - at a minimum they protect against space radiation, small debris, and hull breaches. Larger vessels that support a sizable permanent population have stronger shields that protect against weapons attacks and larger debris. The government ships and the Habitat Station have the strongest shields of the civilian ships. Other General things to keep in mind: ✦ Most civilian ships lack offensive fire power and rely on the Military Armada to provide protection if necessary. Some civilian ships will have small compliment of defensive lasers, but would not last long in a fire-fight against a military ship. ✦ Any ship with a crew of 20 or more is required to have a medbay with supplies and equipment to handle family care, triage, and general hospital procedures. This excluds daily shuttles (though they are required to have first-aid supplies and crew trained in general first aid). ✦ Any ship with what is classified as a permanent population of a significant size is required to have an onboard peace-keeping security task force. This page details the different vessels of the Civilian Convoy. More can be found about the Military Armada HERE. As of right now, the only ships the characters can board are those listed on the Nework Stiky Post, Log Stiky Post, and the OOC Stiky Post. ![]() Image Credit: Juuso Laasonen The Habitat Station is one of the largest ships in the fleet. It houses the largest population of the fleet. It is also where the characters are housed. To learn more about the Habitat Station, go HERE. Scattered throughout the fleet are a number of docking vessels. They serve as giant, space-faring ship yards. The docking ships serve a number of functions: This is where outsiders must first go to gain entry into the Fleet – either into the space the Fleet currently occupies, or onto the actual vessels of the Fleet. All cargo for trade and personal items brought aboard the Fleet vessels are strictly regulated and this is where that process begins. If an outsider does not comply with docking procedures, they are then handled by the military. ✦ Housing for personally owned vessels. Not everyone has the luxury of owning a ship large enough to live on. Most Owmi who own their own personal starships, dock them when not in use. The individual ships of the fleet have limited number of ports and hangerbay space, and very little of that space is available for permanent or semi-permanent personal ship dockings, and usually that space is reserved for that larger ship’s smaller vessels. Individuals who own personal starships will take a public shuttle from the ship where they live to the docking vessels to retrieve their personal ships. ✦ Housing the Fleet's public shuttles. The Fleet would not run as efficiently without these shuttles, of which there are thousands. Each larger vessel or station has their own shuttles that they maintain (and those shuttles dock aboard their parent vessels), but the majority of civilian shuttles are maintained, controlled, and housed by the Docking Ships. ✦ Impound When the peace-task force confiscates personal vessels of Owmi citizens or outsiders, they are housed in specially designated impound docking ships. ✦ Maintenance facilities. When vessels of the Civilian Convoy need repairs, most are serviced by the Docking ships repair ports. Individuals who own personal vessels can employ the services of the docking ship engineers for a fee. (Or they can fix their ships themselves if they know how.) ✦ Manufacture new ships/Stock yards. When new Civilian Convoy vessels are commissioned, they are built at the specially designated docking ships. Individuals can also commission the engineers to build personal vessels, for a fee. Docking Ship Description: ✦ Though each Docking ship is configured slightly different to accommodate the various sizes and makes of vessels of the fleet, they all have a multiple levels of port arms that jut out straight from the central docking center. Some are square-ish, some are spherical, some look like long sticks cobbled together. But they all have in common many docking ports to accommodate the Fleet’s needs. The Military Armada has their own set of docking ships to manage their own vessels. These docking ships do perform some but not all of the same functions as the Civilian Convoy docking ships. Shuttles are the inter-ship public transportation system. They make sure people get safely from one vessel to the next. The shuttles run on a well regulated schedule, and most shuttle lines have frequent shuttles traveling back and forth between destinations (This shuttle schedule can be accesses via the characters’ comm devices or the data sheet they were given upon arrival). The Owmi are somewhat unabashedly proud on their well maintained and extensive public transportation system. A good fleet requires the flow of people from one ship to the next. Physical Description: Shuttles come in various sizes and shapes. There are too many different models and makes to describe them all, but all meet regulations for both efficency and safety. The smallest of shuttles can transport up to 15 people at full capacity. The largest can transport up to 500 at full capacity. There are more smaller to mid-range sized shuttles than larger shuttles. These ships are bulky and lumbering but their purpose is singular and they do it well. They manufacture and distribute the fuel each vessel in the Fleet requires for function. They manufacture two main kinds of fuel – the fuel cores for hyperdrive engines, and the fuel cores for real space engines. They also manufacture various other kinds of fuels and energies the fleet needs. They fuel all of the fleet's ships, civilian and military alike. A Fleet that houses about 250 million individuals requires a lot of food. To meet the needs of that many people, there are numerous ships devoted to agricultural endeavors. Everything that comprises a balanced meal is grown, though, the variety is somewhat limited – grains, vegetables, fruits, proteins in a number of forms: meat, legumes, and a kind of dairy. These ships produce all that food. They also grow the natural products the Fleet uses: plant and animal byproducts. ![]() Image Credit: Juuso Laasonen Design: ✦ These ships are comprised of independant, interlocking hexagonal pannels that can function as separate parts or connect with group around an inner cold fusion core to create a polyhedron sphere. ✦ Each hexagonal pannel has it's own shield generators that can be modified to withstand the vacuum of space or work in conjunction with the cold fusion core that provides the necessary energy and light. These planes provide level surfaces, large enough upon which environments for various agricultural needs are grown and cultivated. – farm lands, orchards, fields, forests, etc. Each panel’s environment is kept distinct with parameter shielding. Each pannal also has its own gravity generator so that ‘down’ is in the direction of the outer hull, and so that nothing will fall ‘up’ into the core. Standing on one plane, an individual could look ‘up’ and see many of the planes on the other sides of the sphere. ✦ In the very center space of this polyhedron sphere is a fusion powered core contained by a magnetic field, it provides energy for the agriculture spher and light to promote photosynthesis. It is like a mini-sun, so its light is very bright and when looking at it directly one would basically see what they see if they look at the sun in our solar system. ✦ Between the outer inorganic hull of each hexagonal pannel, and the inner polyhedron sphere is not pure empty space. This space houses the raw material processing factories for all the organic material the ships produce. A series of transportation structures connect each manufacturing factory together and to the docking bays. This space also houses the ships' administration, command centers, and living communities, as a sizable population must live on the station tending to different planes of agriculture. And with those communities comes small centers of commerse - restuarants, shops, services businesses, etc. Gravity in this inner space is centered towards the center of the sphere. (So here, 'down' is towards the inner core, and 'up' is towards outer space.) There are transition tunnels connecting the two gravitational sections that lead a person from one gravitational direction to the next. These tunnels, with gravity generators centering gravity on the walkway of the tunnels, twist to orient the traverser to the right gravitational orientation. Some find this section of the station the most disconcerting. These ships handle the pruification processes of air, water, and all the waste products the fleet produces. The Owmi try to reuse whatever they can, so most waste material is broken down and recycled in some fashion. Air & Water: ✦ Air and Water Filtration Pods - These pods are self-contained, semi-organic ships designed to interface with all other ships in the fleet. When filters have reached their capacity, or time is scheduled, the pod detaches from ship. They first dump non-cleanable waste byproducts at a waste reclamation ship then they do one of three things: 1) return to original ship, 2) seek out new assignments, if old post has been filled in the meantime, or 3) return to a hub ship if repairs or deep cleaning are needed. Performance levels are monitored by the pod’s crew and periodic maintenance is performed at the air and water hub ships. Organic components are repaired by nanobots which are controlled via trained technicians. For lack of a better description, the organic components contained in the pod are like a giant liver, taking in dirty air and water and expelling clean air and water. Naturally, a component like this can only clean so much water or air before it needs its own deep cleaning. Waste: Following are examples of different types of waste ships (based on the kind of waste they process): ✦ Metal/Scrap metal ✦ Biodegradable - organic ✦ Biological – (you know, shit and piss) ✦ Bodies – all bodies are cremated upon death. (See more information HERE and HERE.) ✦ Toxic waste – medical, disease, poison, radioactive, etc. ✦ Miscellaneous – other waste products not listed ✦ Electronics/tech ✦ Paper, glass, plastic The sole purpose of these ships is to plot the fleet’s next destination. They scout out possible systems for the fleet to visit, and then map out navigable courses for the entire fleet to transverse. They handle the logistics of planning and executing moving an entire civilization. Crews are comprised of military personnel and civilians and they work hand in hand with research personnel. They are usually small size ships with crews of 10 to 30 at most. Because of the nature of their purpose, they also work closely with Provision Acquisition ships to find needed resources. Not all space-flying is in cool star-fighters or pleasure yachts, sometimes space flight is handling the logistics of moving frieght. These vessels come in all sizes - from small shippers to large, barge like cargo haulers. They handle the distribution of goods and products throughout the fleet and the acquisition of supplies and parts that the fleet cannot produce on its own. They work with Navigation ships to locate needed resources when supplies are low or if a need arrises within the fleet. Crews sizes are determined by the size of the ships - the smallest vessels might have 2-4 crew members, whereas the largest might have close to a 100. The Temple ship is classified as a medium sized vessel. Its primary purpose is housing the Orakalla. And because of that, it is the seat of the Owmi’s religion. The high priest, other top religious leaders, and Temple acolytes live aboard this ship. This is also where the characters arrive. The Orakalla is housed specifically in the Sacred Keep, the cavernous, central chamber of the ship. This room appears to be constructed of bluish-black marble. In addition to the Sacred Keep and the quarters for the religious leaders, there are ceremonial rooms and other conference rooms aboard the ship. It has a non-religious command crew, but the job itself attracts those who are more devout. Owmi come to the Orakalla for pilgrimages and have access to the central chamber via reserved viewing balconies. Outward appearance of the ship is not ornate. The ship has a very organic feel to the outer design, the lines and overall form gives the impression of waves on a shore. No society is complete without diverting outlets for entertainment and pleasure. The Owmi believe, so long as their individual commitments to maintaining and improving their society, that pleasure is not a bad thing, in moderation. Everyone needs to relax and unwind every once in a while, it’s actually necessary for productivity. While most ships that have a sizable population have on-site diversions, restaurants, theaters, gyms, etc., the Leisure Ship takes entertainment to another (not necessarily higher, though that too) level. Just about every kind of (non-harmful) amusement can be found on the Leisure Ship. It’s like Las Vegas, Hollywood, and Fhlostine's Paradise rolled into one ship. There are both family-friendly, age-appropriate forms of entertainment and more adult kinds of entertainment. ![]() Image Credit: Juuso Laasonen Design: This ship looks like a smaller version of the Habitat Station. The center of the ship is a sphere like the Agriculture Ships, a spherical polyhedron constructed of many flat planes. This is where the resorts are located. Beaches, rainforests, mountains lakes, some of these resorts will look like anything that could be found on Earth, some look like alien landscapes in surprising colors. They might not all tickle your character’s fancy, but they are all natural landscapes (which should be awe inspiring to anyone), and at least someone finds them relaxing or diverting. In addition to the above, this is also where a lot of the Owmi’s media forms of entertainment are created – holomovies/holoshows and the like. What can be found on the ship: ✦ Nature preserves/zoos ✦ Casinos ✦ Large entertainment venues (concerts, etc.) ✦ Hotels and Resorts of all kinds ✦ Theaters/Playhouses ✦ Fancy/unique restaurants This is not a complete list – however, if your imagination is more expansive, just know that illegal and harmful forms of entertainment are not found on this ship. More information about the Leisure Ship can be found HERE. As one might imagine, the education and research vessels of the Owmi are their particular pride and joy. These ships used for education and research are almost revered like the Temple Ship is – but for different reasons. This is where the bulk of the scientific discoveries happen, the Owmi’s own accomplishments. Design: Various Ships: ✦ Research Vessels - Some ships are devoted solely to research. Some work with the University ships, some work independently on private funding or government grants. ✦ Archive Vessels - There are a number of ships that house the totality of the Owmi’s knowledge. The Grand Library is one of those ships. This ship has the most extensive stores of information and is open to everyone in the fleet. However, your character might find some sections are restricted. ✦ Survey Vessels - These come in a few types: satellites, probes, and manned survey ships. These ships are charged with monitoring the environment the Owmi are currently occupying. Always gathering data, they keep watch for incoming vessels or random space dangers. As mentioned before, the Owmi have impressive medical facilities. Each ship with a certain sized population has on-ship medical facilities. The larger the vessel, the more hospital-like are these facilities. But for long term care or intense treatment for severe injuries/illnesses, there are the medical vessels. Vessel Types: ✦ Medical Ships - Medical ships are used for long-term care facilities, special needs patients, diagnostics for difficult to diagnose diseases, specialized procedures, and medical research. Other Medical ships are used to manufacture medical supplies, including vaccines, drugs, nanobot-bio syrum used by medical professionals. Design: These ships emit the feeling of being clean and sterile. Clean lines with little embellishment, these vessels are made for a purpose, not to be flashy. The majority of design is on the inside. Inside, the clean, sterile feeling continues, though someone with an eye towards the comfort of patients has tempered the harshness that usually accompanies a lab-like setting. A civilization needs things - many, many things. Some things are needs, some things are just wants. Both help make a robust and thriving society. These are the ships that manage the production of things the fleet needs. These ships are big and bulky. They are essentially lumbering cargo ships with attachements depending on their various functions. Mining: Mining ships are equipped to go off independent from the fleet to mine various resources. After receiving both the resource needs of the fleet and the directions to said resources from the Provisiosn ships, Mining ships will leave the fleet to go mining. Though they always stay within communication range of the fleet, they are generally on their own (with their protection escorts.) They return when their holds are full. These ships have a full crew but they also utitlize robots and robotic avatars to perform some of the more dangerous tasks. Refining: The refining ships receive the raw resources from the mining ships and produce usable materials. They stay with the fleet, but generally out of the way. These ships have a full crew but they also utitlize robots and robotic avatars to perform some of the more dangerous tasks. Manufacturing: Manufacturing ships take usable materials and manufacture goods for the fleet. Individuals in the fleet can purchase surplus non-hazardous raw material, non-hazardous material, or manufactured goods of that material. (Plutonium is not available for the general public to consume.) The Central Government ship can opperate as one ship, when fully connected together; or as five separate ships. Each of the four branches of the government (Legislative, Executive, Judicial, and Religious) occupy one section of the Central Government ship. This ship looks like a smaller version of the Habitat Station, but lacking the outer ring. Legislative: The section for the Legislative branch has offices for all representatives along with central chambers for meetings. Executive: This section is not quite as big as the section for the Legislative branch, but it is still grand. This is where all business of the Executive branch is conducted. The Prime Minister’s personal vessel and home is docked on this section of the ship. Judicial: This section houses all the upper courts, the courts that handle appeals and level 3 criminal offenses. (Lower courts are located on the various population-possessing ships.) There are other government vessels. ✦ Prison ships - Only severe criminals are housed in these ships. i.e. murderers, rapists, arsonists, saboteurs, and terrorists, etc. Prisoners are placed in stasis for the duration of their sentence (usually for life.) Crime of this nature is not very high. |
