1. Don't be an asshole Don't be an asshole. Shitty behavior will NOT be tolerated. Don't harass your fellow players. Don't bash the players, the characters, the fandoms, or the ships in the game. Do not create a hostile or toxic environment in our game or in extensions of our game (eg: game group discussions on Plurk/Discord). Respect your fellow players and treat them the way they want to be treated. 2. Respect the line between IC and OOC IC =/= OOC. Don’t take IC, in-game interactions personally. Don’t take OOC knowledge IC unless it would be appropriate. And don’t use your character as a weapon in-game to attack your fellow players. 3. Do not godmod Do not move or attribute any action to any character(s) (or their possessions) not your own without first gaining permission from the player of said other character(s). Be careful and respectful with what you assume about characters not your own – when in doubt: ASK. Additionally, characters with meta powers (magic, the Force, mutant powers, etc.) cannot use their powers against other characters (played or NPC) unless the players have agreed to such beforehand. 4. Be an adult All players must be 18 years of age or older. 5. Roleplay Roleplay is a game of collaborative writing. So, play! Players should be collaborating and playing, with new players, by building new CR inside and outside of their character's fandom. Everyone should try to be inclusive. 1. Don't character-squat Every player is required to be a contributing member of the game, whether that is joining in the meta plot, simply making connections with other characters, or both. The game cannot thrive unless players are playing. Character Squatting will not be tolerated. This is any pattern of activity that technically meets the AC rules, but results in a player being inactive the majority of the time. Examples of this behavior include (but are not limited to): ✦ Being idle for the majority of the month, and only being active around AC. ✦ A pattern of frequent hiatuses, resulting in the player being absent the majority of the time. ✦ A pattern of frequently missing AC or relying on the mercy of the Mod-team to pass the AC. ✦ Handwaving all or most of your critical character/CR development A player will not be penalized for the occasional month of low activity, real life happens to all of us. But if it becomes a pattern, players may be given a warning or a strike against their character(s) (to see details about strikes go HERE). 2. Activity requirements Every player is required to do the minimum of activity for each of their characters every month. Minimum activity is one instance of substantial interaction a month. That instance of play can be any one of the following options: ✦ network comment chain*, with at least seven (7) comments from the player's character. ✦ A network post from the player's character, with no top-level comments are ignored. Minimum activity keeps a character in the game. But doing more than the minium activity gets characters more points (see the Points Page for more info). 3. Activity Check The Activity Check (AC) will be posted from the 1st to the 7th of every month, and every player must respond to the check before 11:59 p.m. PST. (Unless the player has an official hiatus - we talk about that HERE) Links used for the AC must meet the following criteria: ✦ Links can be to posts your character made or links to posts your character responded to. If a player fails to meet the minimum activity requirements per Activity Period, they will receive an Activity Strike (see more about strikes HERE). However, the Mod-team understands the need to be flexible: players can ask for a hiatus (our rule about hiatuses is further down the page, but HERE'S a link to get you there faster 4. Warnings and trigger labels Mature content must be warned for and placed behind a cut, especially these common triggers. This applies for content on the Network, Log, and OOC communities. The following things absolutely must be warned for on threads: violence, sexual content, IC bigotry, and spoilers. If a thread contains this stuff, slap a warning on the original post and put the content behind a cut. If the trigger is in a thread on a Catch-All post, make sure to put a warning in the subject line of the comment when the warning is needed. For warnings more detailed than this, if you feel something should be warned for in your thread, go ahead and add it. We understand that not all triggers are intuitative, but don't be pedantic. It’s better to err on the side of being courteous. And if someone asks you to add a warning/label to your post, just do it. 5. Canon compliance Canon is favored over headcanon if the two conflict. All characters must comply with the rules, facts, and structure of the canon their character comes from. Players should know and accept the major canon facts for their characters and strive to expand their understanding of what they don't already know for their character. We understand that characters grow (or regress, that can happen!) and develop in games. However, they should not evolve beyond what makes that character recognizable, they must stay true to their core canon characterizations. In the case of OCs, we consider the personality/characterizations you've developed for your character, as detailed in your character's application, to be their 'canon characterizations.' Headcanon Headcanon is allowed to fill in the gaps of a character's history/personality. We understand that many aspects of characters are open to interpretation, especially in the absense of explicit canon detail. In the case of ambigious canon gaps (like say, a lack of details about a character's childhood) we do allow headcanon to fill that gap so long as it: ✦ does not contradict the greater canon structure of their universe (headcanon must make sense), ✦ does not render the character a sooper-spechul snow flake, and ✦ fits with the current characters in the game--characters in game are controlling. In the case of ongoing canons (like comic series or television series, etc.) when new information is revealed about your character's past, it must be incorporated. If it contradicts the headcanon you have for your character that you've created to fill the gaps, come see the Mod-team and we will try to help you reincorporate as much of your headcanon as possible. But keep in mind that canon > headcanon. 6. Avoid player-cest Avoid having your characters interact with one another. Sometimes it cannot be helped, example: your Character A needs something that only your Character B provides to everyone else in the game. But do try to keep this to a mimimum. When possible avoid it and try to get your play and characters' needs fulfilled via the other players/characters in the game. We are a game, not a fanfic archive. 7. Writing competence We ask that players maintain the writing skills they exhibited in their applications. We do not require a word minimum or maximum on tags or posts, and we won’t be policing your grammar, punctuation, and spelling with a fine tooth comb. Typos happen! But please make sure you are providing tags and posts that are readable. Additionally, plagiarism is not allowed. 1. Character Apping/Reserving Players can have up to four (4) characters total; and up to two (2) characters from the same fandom so long as they wouldn't reasonably be expected to interact often. (Example: Burt and Ernie from Sesame Street would be expected to interact often so they could not be played by the same player.) Reserves (See Reserves Page): ✦ Reserves are always open. ✦ Reserves last for two weeks. ✦ Players can renew Reserves once (another two weeks). After that they must wait a whole month before placing a reserve on the same character again. ✦ If a player has maxed out their character limit, they cannot reserve/apply for another character until they have an opening on their roster. Applications (See Applications Page): ✦ Apps can be submitted at any time, however, App Days (when apps are officially accepted) are every Saturday. ✦ Players can attempt to app the same character up to three (3) times. After that, whether due to rejection or dropping and picking the character back up, a player can no longer apply for that character. A player must have no strikes on their current characters, and/or cannot be on hiatus if they want to reserve/app more characters. 2. Fandoms and characters We try to be as inclusive of as many fandoms/characters as possible with very few exceptions. Fandoms can be from: books, comics, graphic novels, movies, TV shows, cartoons, video games, table top games, and other media sources (so long as there is a canon setting with enough details to develop well rounded characters). Webcomics/webseries/webcontent are allowable fandoms so long as they are released from a legitimate publishing company. Characters must be from or fit into an established work of fiction. There must exist a detailed account of that fandom world with enough structure for the Mod-team to understand a defined setting for the fandom. Also, the Mods need to be able to fact check applications, so there needs to be information in English about the fandom. The game accepts the following types of characters: ✦ Canon OCs so long as the character fits within their canon setting framework (characters from table top RPGs, characters from such media will fall in this category) ✦ Canon Variations so long as each version is distinct enough from the others (example: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, BBC's Sherlock, ABC's Elementary). ✦ Canon AUs If there is an AU version specifically referenced in canon (example: Star Trek TOS and Star Trek AOS; or Deep Space Nine Benjamin Sisko and Mirror Benjamin Sisko) these are allowed. ✦ CR AUs - Characters with previous history from another game so long as their experience in that previous game has not erased their core characterization. ✦ Rule!63 AUs (Sex-switched AUs) are allowed if the Mod-team feels that their presence in game will work with the setting. All Rule!63 AUs must be mod approved. Missing from this list are 'What if...' AUs. At the moment, this list will not be expanding. The Mod-team reserves the right to decide to cap the number of AUs for any fandom. There are some characters that are not allowed. And there are some character types that are subject to a cap. ✦ Historical Figures ✦ Gods and Goddesses ✦ Taken Characters ✦ Evil Aligned Characters ✦ Fandom Saturation ✦ Banned Characters/Fandoms 3. Lines/Plots: Allowences and Restrictions Het, slash, femme, and gen are all accepted and encouraged in the game. Characters do not need to stick to canon ships ONCE in game, but relationships should always be played out and developed in a realistic manner. Most mature lines/themes are also allowed, but must behind cuts and players should always use appropriate ratings/trigger warnings for posts when necessary. Players should keep in mind that while sex lines are permitted, this is not a sex game. Such lines cannot be the whole focus of the player reason for being in the game, AND all sex lines must be between adult characters. ✦ Prohibited lines. In-game: rape, severe abuse/assault lines, child abuse, domestic violence, Parent/child incest, sibling incest, bestiality*, adult/child sexual relations, Mpreg (unless part of the character’s fandom), and problematic kinks are prohibited. *The Mods understand that some characters will themselves be what we would consider animals, but all characters in game must be sentient. For the purposes of this game, the Mods will define 'bestiality' as sexual acts perpetrated by a sentient being against a non-sentient animal. 1. Game time vs. real time Though the game is set on a spaceship and the characters are surrounded by aliens, this game has a standard 1:1 day ratio. So 1 OOC day = 1 IC day. 2. Hiatuses Players are allowed to take hiatuses from the game, real life happens. However, there are a few guidelines players must follow regarding hiatuses. If a player is on hiatus for the majority of the month (16 or more days), or spanning the week of the Activity Check they will be excused from that month's AC, and they will not receive a strike. ✦ Hiatuses should be used sparingly and should not be abused. A player cannot miss two AC's in a row. And if the Mod-team notices a pattern of frequent hiatus useage, they will intervene. ✦ When a player is on hiatus they will not be able to app additional characters or use their character points. But if a player is struggling, we encourage them to come speak to the Mod-team. We are understanding. But we can't help you if you don't let us know what's going on. We'll work with you, we don't want to lose players. 3. Drops Dropping is something that hits all of us at one point or another. For whatever reason you need to drop a character or the game as a whole, we understand. However, please go HERE and fill out the form there as a courtesy for our record keeping. Characters that are drop lose all their points that cannot be retrieved if reapped. 4. Canon updating Canon updating is allowed, however players come talk to the Mod-team first. There will be a few steps a player must do to get the canon update. 5. Spoilers and new materials Not everyone has access to new materials in ongoing fandoms the moment they are released. So we should be courteous to each other. Don't worry about spoiling the Mods in your apps (it's a hazard of the job) but in game play please place spoilers behind cuts clearly labeled with a warning for that spoiler (ex: "Warning: thread will contain spoilers from Doctor Who Season 1 Ep 8"). Spoiler warnings should be put on all new materials less than a month old. (And yes, we understand that some people still will not see the new stuff by then, but we have to make the cut off somewhere). Brand new material must be out two weeks before players can app characters from said new material or use said new material in apps (in the instance of picking a canon point for a character from a show that is on going.) In the event new material reveals details about a character's backstory, this can be used immediately. But please be mindful of discussing it in game and use cut tags and spoiler warnings. 6. Fourth-walling/Canon-puncturing Fourth-walling/Canon puncturing is allowed if a player wants their character to be Fourth-walled/Canon-punctured. This is left up to the character's player to decide. Do not canon-puncture a character if the character's player does not want it to happen. Players may reference the Taken Page to see who is, and who is not, canon-puncturable. Always check first! If a player wishes to canon-puncture their character, they must not do this in an overt, in-your-face way in the game. Charcters discussing it among friends is certainly fine, but players should avoid posts that do not allow others the option to pass it by. 7. Meta Powers All characters are depowered upon arrival. All meta powers, super powers, magic, mutant powers, super powers, special awesome super abilities are gone when your character opens their eyes for the first time on the ship. However, they can earn back their abilties over the course of the game via the Point System. (Go to the Points Page for details about that.) Characters will still have the following: their muscle memory and their knowledge-book learnings/street education/etc. that they had at the canon point they have been pulled from. The only exception to the power-zeroing are personal, passive powers that a character needs to survive. If your character has one of these, come talk to the Mods, and we will try to work something out. 8. Points and Strikes The game has a points and strikes system. Players earn points for their character by going above and beyond minimum activity levels. Players earn strikes for their character by missing (unexcused) AC. Points can be redeemed for the return of the character's abilities, for participation in special missions/plots, or for items from home and from the game. Strikes can be purged by doing double the minimum AC requirements within an AC period. For all the details about the Points system, go HERE. For all the details about the Strikes system, go HERE. 9. Crime and Violence Crime and violence are permitted; however, depending on the severity of the crime, players should expect consequences for their characters' actions. Petty crimes will mostly go unnoticed. Moderate to major crimes will have consequences. Go HERE) to learn more about how crime and punishment is handled within the game structure. And a list of what crimes will fly under the radar and which ones will get a character flagged for consequences. 10. Game plots This game is a mix of slice-of-life with an over-arching plot. And to add spice, there will be game plots thrown into the mix. The over-arching plot will be determined by the actions of the characters in game. Game plots will be either run by the Mod-team or players can helm a plot with mod permission. Players are not required to participate in the over-arching plot or game plots. However, depending on the current plot, players might not be able to ignore them. ✦ More questions If you have questions, you can ask them below in the comment titled 'Questions' or you can contact the Mods HERE. ✦ Rules Disclaimer All players must abide by the rules stated on this rules page, and any other information on our other information pages. Final decisions on all rules and matters are, naturally, left to the Mods' discretion. However, we welcome respectful discussions and suggestions. Rule breaking will be addressed by the Mods as they are brought to our attention. We prefer working with players first before removing them from the game and we will try our best to resolve problems so that everyone gets to stay and play. However, severe rule breaking (for example: egregious harrassment of other players) might be grounds for immediate removal. Our goal is to create a fun, safe place to play. All rules are subject to change - to be added to or subtracted from - at the discretion of the Mods. Major changes will be announced in the OOC comm. If you have clarification questions or concerns about something not addressed, please feel free ask them in the comment titled 'Questions' below, or to contact the Mods HERE. |
